Wet Willie in Tuscaloosa #7

Wet Willie in Tuscaloosa #7

Alabama Music Office.com goes to the historic Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa, Alabama to see Wet Willie and Bad Brad & The Sipsey Slims perform for The Alabama Blues Project Benefit September 2012.
Wet Willie is an American band from Mobile, Alabama, U.S. They were best known for their hit "Keep On Smilin'," reaching #10 on the Billboard Chart in August 1974, but had a number of charted songs in the 1970s utilizing their soulful brand of Southern rock.
Drummer Lewis Ross assembled the musicians for a group called "Fox" in the summer of 1969, which a year later became known as "Wet Willie."Wet Willie was a versatile, high-energy Southern rock band that, from 1971 until 1978, produced an array of albums awash in good-time music, rollicking high-energy blues-rock, and white Southern soul, but racked up just one Top Ten hit and a lot of admirers.
The core members of the band during that period were Jimmy Hall, vocals, harmonica, saxophone; Jimmy's brother Jack Hall on bass; John Anthony on keyboards; Ricky Hirsch on guitar, and Lewis Ross on drums and percussion. The duo of girls singing background vocals dubbed "The Williettes" were staple of the classic Wet Willie sound, and always featured Jimmy & Jack's sister, Donna Hall. Keyboardist Mike Duke also joined from The Wetter The Better LP onwards. For a short period of time in 1974 UK singer Elkie Brooks joined the band as a backing singer, as did future Honkette Leslie Hawkins.
Wet Willie put out several albums on Capricorn Records between 1971 and 1977. Along with a "Greatest Hits" album released on Polydor Records, they also released 2 more final studio albums on Epic Records, although some hits collections and further live recordings have been released as recently as 2006. Perhaps their best-known LP is the 1973 live album, Drippin' Wet, but their main claim to fame is the hit single, "Keep On Smilin,'" which reached #10 on the Billboard singles chart. They also enjoyed some other Billboard-charted songs with "Country Side Of Life," "Everything That 'Cha Do" (Will Come Back To You), "Leona," and from their Epic Records period, "Street Corner Serenade" and "Weekend" from the LP's Manorisms and Which One's Willie? They toured and recorded extensively from 1969 through the early Eighties, and they still perform today.
Wet Willie released a new live CD "Miles of Smiles" in 2012 and is touring with 4 original members, including original lead singer Jimmy Hall, brother Jack Hall on bass, sister Donna Hall on vocals and TK Lively on drums, as well as other long time members Ric Seymour on guitar and vocals, Ricky Chancey on guitar and newest member Bobby Mobley on keys.

Wet Willie in Tuscaloosa #6

Wet Willie in Tuscaloosa #6  (A killer performance of "Rendezvous With The Blues.")

Alabama Music Office.com goes to the historic Bama Theatre in downtown
Tuscaloosa, Alabama to see Wet Willie and Bad Brad & The Sipsey Slims
perform for The Alabama Blues Project Benefit September 2012.

Wet Willie began as a thrown together blues-rock band during the
magical Summer of 1969 "way down in Alabama"...(Mobile, to be precise).
The original nucleus of the group that eventually became known as Wet
Willie was called Fox. The first "gig" was a booking in Panama City,
Florida at a club called the Oddessy, a geodesic dome right on the
beach. For those who must have a concept, or reason and meaning behind
every occurring work in any medium of art, the only one I can think of
was "fun". Raw, hormonal...fun.

Milyn Satterfield of Royal & Toulouse Interview

Milyn Satterfield of Royal & Toulouse Interview

(For what ever reason YouTube processed this in 720P instead of 1080P-I will repost soon)

Alabama Music Office.com goes to Mountain Brook, Alabama to interview Milyn Satterfield of Royal & Toulouse.
Royal and Toulouse was originally formed in 2006 in Birmingham, AL at a jam session with Ricky Little on bass, Milyn Satterfield on vocals / lyrics and Alex Troughton on drums.

Milyn Satterfield has a long history of performing from choirs, theatre and bands at a very young age to film school in San Francisco where she could be found singing her heart out at any bar, dorm room, bus, trolley or street corner whenever possible. She also lived in Manhattan after college and sang with some very impressive acts and trained with the best in New York. She then ended up back in Birmingham jamming with Ricky & Alex. Ricky Little and Alex Troughton are very well known and respected musicians. Together they were in the band Jive Mob (that later formed into The Deep End) which had extensive tours and was chased by many major record labels. Jive Mob won “Best Hip Hop Band” in 2001 for the Birmingham Area Music Awards by Birmingham Weekly (BAMA Awards). Milyn Satterfield was nominated for Best Female Vocalist in 2006 for the BAMA Awards

Royal & Toulouse’s impromptu album, “Skull Orchard” is Milyn Satterfield on lyrics and vocals, Ray Calhoun on guitar, Ricky Little on bass, and Tommy Little plays drums on the final track of the album. Many thanks to Boris Skalsky, of Dead Heart Bloom, who recorded and mixed Tommy’s drum tracks in NYC. “Skull Orchard” has gotten a lot of airplay online as well as radio stations in England, Australia, Japan, France and the US along with some stellar reviews. A song from the debut album was recently featured on the Warning Track Records compilation disc.

The New CD “Southern Circus” was released in July of 2011. It was recorded in Birmingham, Alabama with the founding members of Royal & Toulouse (Milyn, Ricky and Alex) and features several other top shelf musicians. This album features a horn section, a hip-hop lyricist and a slew of other great musicians including keys with Matt Slocum of Oteil & the Peacemakers, (Grammy nominated) Susan Tedeschi Band, Jimmy Herring Band, and many others. Also the tracks on “Southern Circus” feature lyrics by Mat Gould as well as vocalist Milyn Satterfield.

What Makes a Music Artist Great? by Jerry W. Henry

The derivation of the word “art” basically means... to join together. With that in mind, I want to make you aware of how other great music artists from Mozart to Bob Dylan made music history. Included in these greats would be Elvis, the Beatles and Johnny Cash. What did they do to make themselves considered great? What do they all have in common?

Each is unique. Each is creative. Each changed the popular music of their times by combining already popular forms in a new way.

When Elvis recorded in Sun Studios in those earliest days of rock and roll, he combined the influences around him. Young Elvis brought Gospel, country and blues together.

Bob Dylan combined his Woody Guthrie/folk with rock. His protest songs were “protested” when he first electrified them.

When the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper, they had mixed pop with orchestration that produced a change in song structure.

Johnny Cash reinvented himself each decade combining his music with other forms of music through out his career.

Watch the movie, Amadeus to learn of Mozart.

If you want to make music that changes the world don’t want to be the rocker playing for drunks in dumpy bars, the latest rapper in the hood, another broken hearted/hell raisin’ country singer or the latest kids on the block. Do something that has not been done before by combining elements that are already popular in a new and creative way.

After all, it is art…. to join together.

Scott Ward Band at Horse Pens 40

Scott Ward Band at Horse Pens 40

Alabama Music Office.com goes to Horse Pens 40 to attend Jam For Duane 2012 at Horse Pens 40 near Steele, Alabama. This is an annual event that honors Duane Allman. The Scott Ward band was on hand to perform Johnny Wyker's "Baby Ruth." The young guitarist, Tommy York, is a Alabama musician to watch. The first cold snap of the year moved in and caught us in t-shirts and shorts.

“Gadsden -" Scott Ward has been a fan of Muscle Shoals music for years. But it wasn’t until he started visiting the area about 10 years ago and met local players and songwriters that he really began to learn what Muscle Shoals music is all about. “I started going to Muscle Shoals to try and start getting something going,” said Ward, a 47-year-old bassist and guitarist from Gadsden. “David Hood invited me to come hear The Decoys.” The admiration has led Ward to recording an album that pays tribute to the area’s music and those behind the scenes, many of whom still live in the area. Ward said he spent some time trying to break into the Nashville music scene, but nothing materialized. “When I came to Muscle Shoals, it had more of a feeling of camaraderie,” Ward said. “There was just a laid back feeling.” Ward said he’s a fan of the Rolling Stones, Bob Seger and Julian Lennon tracks recorded in the Shoals. Ward said he wanted to get the same inspiration Lennon got ”
Russ Corey - Florence Times Daily

"Scott Ward Band, has released Muscle Shoals Through Decatur (Lucky Dog Records) with it's well chosen 11 tracks. The Scott Ward Band is on the leading edge of the music revival going on in Muscle Shoals. The songs are all written by Shoals greats. They are joined by Spooner Oldham on keyboards. I count Scott as a friend and appreciate his tireless effort in bringing great music to the masses. The last time we communicated, he told me that he is working on a new project with Johnny Wyker. Available at Pegasus Records in Florence, Criminal Records in Atlanta, Cosmic Debris Records in Anniston, and FYE Stores in Gadsden, Decatur, Mobile, Birmingham, and Hot Springs, Arkansas." Wet Willie in Tuscaloosa #4

Wet Willie in Tuscaloosa #4
Alabama Music Office.com goes to the historic Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa, Alabama to see Wet Willie and opening act, Bad Brad and The Sipsey Slims playing for The Alabama Blues Project benefit.

THE WET WILLIE BAND- As a legion of fans will attest, Wet Willie was perhaps the hardest rocking of all the 70s era Southern Rock bands, after the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band issued an enviable array of rollicking, high energy, soulful blues-rock classics, including the national chart-topping anthem Keep On Smilin. ---- Today Wet Willie continues to excite fans with their live performances, and they appear live in two distinct formats: The Wet Willie Band consists of original members Jack Hall on bass, John Anthony ..boards, T.K. Lively on the drums, and Jacks sister Donna D Hall on vocals and harmonies. Ric Seymour, with the band for over a decade plays guitar and handles lead and backing vocals, while Ricky Chancey plays blues harp and guitar. ---- When scheduling permits, original lead vocalist Jimmy Hall appears, and the band is billed as Wet Willie, featuring Jimmy Hall. ---- In 1969 Wet Willie got together in Mobile behind the powerful vocals, sax and harp of Jimmy Hall, with his brother Jack on bass. Ricky Hirsch played lead guitar, John Anthony was on the keys, and Lewis Ross was the drummer. Early influences included the Stones, Animals and Taj Mahal, but their sound was closer in spirit to early Otis Redding or Little Richard- which made their move to Macon, Ga in 1970 a natural one. After all, Macon was the hometown of Redding and Richard, as well as the headquarters of newly-formed Capricorn Records. Wet Willie auditioned for Capricorn and were hard at work on their debut album by the Fall of the same year. ---- In contrast to Capricorn label-mates the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tuckers long guitar jams, Wet Willie was steeped in sweaty, good-time R&B- a potent gumbo of soulful rock and funky rhythm and blues with fiery vocals that helped define Southern Rock. ---- The band went on to release six albums for Capricorn, including Drippin Wet, recorded live in New Orleans, which perhaps best captured Wet Willies energetic live show. Their fourth release, Keep On Smilin gave them a hit with the title track. The addition of the Williettes, featuring sister Donna Hall, enhanced the groups sound further with a gospel and soul sensibility. Other popular tracks recorded during their Capricorn years include Countryside of Life, Leona and Dixie Rock. ---- In 1978 Wet Willie reformed with a new line-up and a contract with Epic Records. Founding brothers Jimmy and Jack Hall were joined by additional members Mike Duke ..boards, drummer T.K. Lively, and guitarists Larry Berwald and Marshall Smith. The Epic albums, Manorisms and Which Ones Willie? yielded two more chart hits- Streetcorner Serenade and Weekend. ---- After pursuing other interests in the 1980s, Wet Willie re-emerged in the 90s and started accepting select concert dates around the Southeast. In 1990 the band was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and in March of 2001 was also honored by the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

Today The Wet Willie Band continues to excite fans with their live performances, and they appear in two distinct configurations: The Wet Willie Band consists of original members Jack Hall on bass, John Anthony ..boards, T.K. Lively on the drums, and sister Donna D Hall on vocals and harmonies. Ric Seymour, has been with the band for over a decade on lead vocals and guitar and backing vocals, Ricky Chancey plays blues harp and guitar. ------- When scheduling permits, original vocalist Jimmy Hall can appear, and the band is then billed as Wet Willie, featuring Jimmy Hall. ------Thanks everybody we hope to see you at one of our shows real soon.

Buddy Causey Interview

Buddy Causey Interview

Alabama Music Office.com goes from our office through the door into our studio in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to record our Buddy Causey interview.
Buddy Causey started recording in Muscle Shoals at 19 years of age and had record deals on United Artist, Capitol, Roulette, and Warner Bros. Buddy has toured and recorded all over the world . One of Buddy's most memorable experiences was recording at Abbey Road Studio and meeting George Martin.
December 7TH 2007 Buddy suffered an extremely unusual stroke that left him blind for a while , walked with a walker , had no balance , stuttered severely  ,went through a divorce , lost everything he had literally. He went to the University of Alabama  for  voice therapy. They used Buddy as a  case study because they had never studied a singer that had  strokes before. After a year of treatments the doctor looked down his throat at his vocal chords and said Buddy I hate to tell you this but you are going to have to accept the fact that you will never be able to sing again, you have nerve damage to one of your vocal chords which has left it half the size of the normal one. That was the bottom for Buddy he had lost everything he had and even his ability to sing.. Buddy started reading the bible , praying ,and forming a relationship with God . He still was very unclear about  what his purpose was in life  .He then began asking God to let him sing again and promised God that if he would let him sing again he would sing for God and his Glory.. It was over 4 years from the time Buddy had his first stroke to when he finally started recording his CD called WELL DONE MY SON which isthe 1st installment payment on his promise to God . The music on this CD is Southern Rock with an R&B GROOVE with the Christian lyrics that God gave him.
Some of the groups that Buddy sang with were, The Daze of The Weak, Cross, Clear, Buddy Causey Band & Cooter Brown.  Buddy's goal is to sing in churches in all the towns and areas he had sang and performed in before he had turned his life over to God to show people who are hurting and in severe need of hope and love  and  tell these  people that if God can change him and his life then he can do it for them as well. Buddy found his purpose and the best job in the world working and singing for God ! If you would like Buddy to come to your church to tell his story and hear him sing the songs on WELL DONE MY SON  and hear the stories behind these songs you can reach him on FACEBOOK on the BUDDY CAUSEY ARTIST PAGE OR  BuddyCausey.com

The Decoys are a five-man powerhouse rock n' roll band, featuring five of the most seasoned musicians anywhere. David Hood, bass guitarist, was a member of the world famous Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, better known as "The Swampers", made famous in the song "Sweet Home Alabama". David was recently inducted, along with the rest of "the swampers", into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville,Tn. Congrats, and well deserved.
 ..

Kelvin Holly has long been recognized as one of the South's premier guitarists. A long time member of Little Richard's touring band, and Grammy Award winning band "The Amazing Rhythm Aces", Kelvin has also appeared on numerous recordings and soundtracks with artists like, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Gregg Allman, Jimmy Hall, Little Richard, and many more.

N.C Thurman plays keyboards, harmonica, guitar, and vocals. He has recorded or played with artists such as Percy Sledge, Gregg Allman, Hank Williams Jr., Little Richard, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, and is currently touring with country music newcomer Gary Nichols.

Mike Dillon completes the band with timing and showmanship on the drums. Mike was a member of "The Dickey Betts Band" for two years. and was also a member of the Country Pop group "The Shooters" that was featured on CBS records from 87 to 91.
The Decoys was formed almost twenty years ago by veteran record producer, Johnny Sandlin (The Allman Brothers Band, Widespread Panic, Delbert McClinton). The band has grown to gain wide respect and recognition. "They're kinda like Muscle Shoals own house band, backing up anyone who comes thru town", to quote one record industry vip. The band recently recorded their debut CD, entitled "Shot From The Saddle", at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals and is avaliable at the given website. Pyrite Parachute at Rogue Tavern

Pyrite Parachute at Rogue Tavern

Alabama Music Office.com goes to downtown Birmingham, Alabama to see Pyrite Parachute at Rogue Tavern.
Birmingham, Alabama's Pyrite Parachute was formed in the summer of 2007 by musicians looking for a creative change of pace. With diverse musical backgrounds in classical, country, rock and jazz the band began focusing less on the usual fare and more on improvisational jam, old-school progressive rock and down-home southern blues. With members originating from Virginia down to the plains of Alabama the band has acquired a unique musical perspective that resonates with audiences. With an unmistakable blues drive, precise jazz/funk rhythms, classical interplay, soulful down-home vocals and constant improvisation the band appeals to both old-school progressive rock fans and followers of the current jam scene.
