The derivation of the word “art” basically means... to join
together. With that in mind, I want to make you aware of how other great music
artists from Mozart to Bob Dylan made music history. Included in these greats
would be Elvis, the Beatles and Johnny Cash. What did they do to make
themselves considered great? What do they all have in common?
Each is unique. Each is creative. Each changed the popular
music of their times by combining already popular forms in a new way.
When Elvis recorded in Sun Studios in those earliest days of
rock and roll, he combined the influences around him. Young Elvis brought
Gospel, country and blues together.
Bob Dylan combined his Woody Guthrie/folk with rock. His
protest songs were “protested” when he first electrified them.
When the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper, they had mixed pop
with orchestration that produced a change in song structure.
Johnny Cash reinvented himself each decade combining his
music with other forms of music through out his career.
Watch the movie, Amadeus to learn of Mozart.
If you want to make music that changes the world don’t want
to be the rocker playing for drunks in dumpy bars, the latest rapper in the
hood, another broken hearted/hell raisin’ country singer or the latest kids on
the block. Do something that has not been done before by combining elements
that are already popular in a new and creative way.
After all, it is art…. to join together.

Originality stemming from a fresh musical position ..... Centered..
They sound like one of a kind. They're not imitating their own favorite artist; what they say is not said with reservation, they fully believe it, they are not "looking at the result of their musical statement' or the length of the shadow they cast, they are centered and fully comfortable in their musical statements, whether the audience likes it or not. Here (it is) I am, no apologies.

Unique. Yes. But not TOO unique, or else no-one will overstand!
Art is perhaps taking tradition or traditional elements and forging something personal out of it?
The Beatles certainly used traditional elements, as did Elvis, Hendrix, etc.
I'm trying, too, combining the sound of the age-old Finnsih national instrument, the 5-string kantele
with other instruments it may not even have met before, in ways not used before.
I'm having some success with this, but predictably not yet as great as the Beatles' success,
which I'm happy for - I wouldn't want to be recognised everywhere in the world and torn to pieces if seen outside my hotel suite!
But I realise I'm on a tangent.

Hi Jerry.
Knowledge I think... Knowing your craft and knowing your reasons for being what you are. Be it choice, guidance or force that got you where you are, you know your skills, your limits, and your downfalls, which you would avoid of course. Working on improvement constantly, because when you believe you know it all, you're a victim of self destruction. Nowhere else to go because you're the best? you may be great bbecause you know your craft, but the best? Who said?
Music is language, a communication we all understand, feel and recognise, so what makes a musician an artist? What makes the artist great?
Simple Jerry,
MUSIC!

A very interesting, concise and simple explanation. Many artist never consider this formula. Thanks Jerry.
ReplyDeleteGreat insight Jerry. I think doing that is easier said than done.

in order to do something remarkable, I'll have to leave comfort behind.

I'd like to add that great music and art is also very social ... the artists you mentioned would not be the household names they are without the others in their groups... music and art are essentially social, collaborative and cooperative endeavors. New Orleans, where I work and play, has been characterized as embodying the "improvisational impulse" and it is that impulse that has provided the ideas and innovation that have lent the city its reputation as one of the most creative cities in the world.... we are now moving beyond improvisation and innovation in music and arts to also include economics, work systems, neighborhood organization and more ....

Most artists are drawn to a particular genre (mine is blues) or choose to market themselves in a particular genre, and grow their fan base by staying within the general parameters or traditions of that genre. But you are correct Jerry, by retaining elements of the original music form and combining new/non-traditional musical elements, an artist can grow a new fan base without alienating their original fan base. How many artists owe their success to the crossover hit?
ReplyDeleteSal, love what you said about New Orleans. The NOLA group Galactic is a wonderful example of the what happens when you mix the traditional and eclectic, classic and contemporary.
